NH-183 Four-Laning DPR Tender Issued by NHAI for Key Kerala Highway Upgrade
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has taken a significant step towards the development of National Highway 183 in Kerala by issuing a consultancy tender for the preparation of a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the proposed four-laning of the highway between Anjilimoodu, near Chengannur town, and Kumily. The tender marks the beginning of the planning and design phase for one of the important highway corridors connecting central Kerala with the state's eastern high-range regions and the Tamil Nadu border.
According to the tender documents published by NHAI, the consultancy assignment covers the preparation of a DPR for the development of a four-lane highway from Km 62.100 at Anjilimoodu near Chengannur town to Km 215.450 at Kumily on NH-183 in Kerala. The scope of work includes detailed surveys, engineering studies, traffic assessments, feasibility analysis, identification of bypass requirements, junction improvements, and preparation of project reports necessary for future implementation of the highway upgrade.
NH-183 is one of Kerala's important national highway corridors. The highway connects several major towns and economic centers while serving as a critical route for passenger traffic, commercial transportation, agricultural produce movement, tourism activities, and interstate connectivity. The corridor links central Kerala with the high-range districts and eventually connects to Tamil Nadu, making it an important route for both regional and long-distance travel.
The issuance of the DPR consultancy tender does not mean that construction work has been awarded. Instead, it represents an important preliminary stage in the project development cycle. The selected consultant will be responsible for conducting detailed technical investigations and preparing comprehensive project documentation that will help determine the final alignment, design standards, land acquisition requirements, traffic projections, environmental considerations, and estimated project cost.
The proposed four-laning of NH-183 is expected to address several transportation challenges along the corridor. Parts of the existing highway experience increasing traffic volumes, travel delays, and safety concerns due to road geometry constraints and capacity limitations. Upgrading the corridor to four lanes is expected to improve traffic flow, enhance road safety, reduce travel time, and support future traffic growth.
The development is particularly important for districts and communities located along the route. Improved highway infrastructure can facilitate faster movement of goods and services, strengthen tourism connectivity, improve access to markets, and support economic activities in the region. Better road infrastructure can also contribute to reduced vehicle operating costs and more efficient transportation networks.
The tender has been issued by NHAI's Technical Division and forms part of the authority's broader efforts to upgrade strategic highway corridors across India. Once the DPR is completed and approved, the project can move to subsequent stages such as statutory clearances, land acquisition planning, funding approvals, and eventually construction procurement.
The announcement comes at a time when NH-183 is receiving increased attention from both state and central authorities. Recently, the Central Government approved the first phase of the Kollam–Theni NH-183 development project, highlighting the growing focus on improving the corridor's capacity and connectivity. The latest DPR consultancy tender for the Anjilimoodu–Kumily section further reinforces the long-term vision of transforming NH-183 into a modern highway capable of supporting future transportation and economic requirements.
With the DPR process now set to begin, stakeholders across Kerala's infrastructure and transportation sectors will closely monitor the project's progress. The preparation of a detailed and technically sound project report will be a crucial step in determining the future scope, design, and implementation strategy for one of the state's most important highway development initiatives.
