₹1 Lakh Crore Tunnel Plan to Cut Delhi-Gurugram Journey Time from 1 Hour to Just 15 Minutes

In a bold infrastructure move, the Indian government is exploring the construction of a high-speed tunnel connecting Talkatora Stadium in Delhi to Gurugram. Spanning approximately 28–30 kilometers, this subterranean route could cut current travel time of one hour to just 10–15 minutes. The ₹1 lakh crore proposal aims to ease congestion, reduce emissions, and improve air quality in the National Capital Region (NCR).

The initiative is part of a larger project to decongest Delhi’s transport network, with ₹30,000–₹40,000 crore allocated specifically to the capital. Feasibility studies and environmental assessments are currently underway to determine the tunnel's route, assess structural complexities, and estimate costs. The plan also includes the potential development of additional corridors, such as the Sarai Kale Khan to INA-Nelson Mandela Marg stretch.

With Delhi’s traffic growth and surging vehicle registrations—4.5 lakh new two-wheelers, 1.9 lakh cars, and 20,000 heavy vehicles registered in 2024–25—the proposed tunnel is seen as a much-needed solution to reduce congestion and enhance urban mobility. This development aligns with the government’s commitment to sustainable transportation and carbon neutrality by 2070.

Beyond traffic decongestion, the tunnel is expected to significantly cut emissions, improve fuel efficiency, and enhance road safety. It is envisioned to be one of the fastest urban-mobility corridors in India. However, its success will depend on overcoming challenges such as underground utilities, heritage zones, and inter-jurisdictional coordination between Delhi and Haryana. Public feedback and environmental clearances will be essential to move the project forward.

This project is an essential part of the government's broader efforts to modernize urban infrastructure, including ongoing expansions like the Dwarka Expressway and the upcoming Delhi–Ahmedabad high-speed rail corridor.
